Gujarat Cabinet approves implementation of Uniform Civil Code

Gujarat: State Home Minister Harsha Sanghvi announced on Saturday that the Gujarat Cabinet has approved the formation of a committee to implement the Uniform Civil Code. The committee is headed by a retired High Court judge and consists of three to four members. Earlier, the BJP governments of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh had announced the implementation of UCC in their states.

What is Uniform Civil Code...?
The Uniform Civil Code is a order to replace individual laws based on the scriptures and customs of every major religious community in India with general rules governing every citizen.

A Uniform Civil Code means a set of personal laws common to all citizens.

The Supreme Court in 1985 ruled in favor of Shah Bano under the provision of maintenance of wife, children and parents (section 125) of the All India Penal Code, which applies to all citizens irrespective of religion. It recommended that a Uniform Civil Code should be formulated further.
