Delhi: The Indian Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is reportedly finalizing rules for the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA),aiming to implement the act before the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and the model code of conduct comes into effect, according to news agency ANI.

The CAA, passed in 2019, offers a pathway to Indian citizenship for undocumented immigrants belonging to Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Parsi, Buddhist, and Christian communities who have faced religious persecution in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. However, the act has been met with controversy due to its exclusion of Muslims, raising concerns about discrimination and violation of the Indian Constitution.

The implementation of the CAA has been delayed due to the lack of finalized rules. The MHA's reported move to expedite the process suggests the government's intention to fulfill its promise of facilitating citizenship for eligible persecuted minorities. However, it is likely to reignite debate surrounding the act and its potential impact on India's social fabric and religious harmony.
