New Delhi :The Ministry of Education has officially commenced the online submission and registration of applications for the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) on the National Scholarship Portal (NSP). This initiative, aimed at economically disadvantaged school students from Class IX to XII, seeks to reduce dropouts and promote education at the secondary stage.
Under the NMMSS, one lakh fresh scholarships are awarded to deserving Class IX students each year, with the opportunity for renewal in subsequent years through Classes X to XII. These scholarships, valued at ₹12,000 per annum, are provided to students studying in State Government, Government-aided, and local body schools.
The NMMSS scholarships are disbursed directly into the bank accounts of selected students through electronic transfers via the Public Financial Management System (PFMS) in accordance with the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mode. This initiative falls under the Central Sector Scheme.
To be eligible for these scholarships, students must meet specific criteria. Their parental income from all sources should not exceed ₹3,50,000 per annum. Additionally, applicants must have scored a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent grade in their Class VII examinations, with a 5% relaxation for SC/ST students.
The application process involves two levels of verification on the National Scholarship Portal. First, at the Institution/School level, it is conducted by the Institute Nodal Officer (INO). Second, the District Nodal Officer (DNO) performs verification at the district level.
For the current year, important dates for the application process are as follows:
- Opening of Portal: October 1, 2023
- Last date for application submission: November 30, 2023
- Last date for the First level (INO verification): December 15, 2023
- Last date for Second level (DNO) verification: December 30, 2023.
The National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme aims to provide essential financial support to deserving students, ensuring they have the opportunity to pursue their education and build a brighter future.
