Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced via Twitter that the Central government has officially notified the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2024. These rules aim to facilitate the acquisition of Indian citizenship by minorities persecuted on religious grounds in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan.

Formerly known as the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA),the newly enacted rules grant Indian citizenship to refugees who sought shelter in India before December 31, 2014, due to religious persecution. The legislation targets six minority communities: Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis, and Christians, originating from the three aforementioned countries.

Under the CAA Rules, 2024, eligible individuals can apply for citizenship through registration or naturalization under section 6B.

Notably, the government emphasizes that the CAA is designed to remove legal barriers to rehabilitation and citizenship for those who have endured persecution, offering them a dignified life and safeguarding their cultural, linguistic, and social identities.

Responding to misconceptions surrounding the CAA, the notification reassures that the Act does not revoke the citizenship of any Indian, regardless of religion. It clarifies that the legislation exclusively benefits those who have suffered persecution and have no alternative refuge besides India.

The implementation of these rules marks another step in fulfilling the government's commitment to protecting persecuted minorities and realizing the constitutional promise of providing sanctuary to vulnerable communities.
