Belagavi Makes History With a Gigantic Khadi Tricolour

In a proud moment for Karnataka, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah unveiled the world’s second-largest Khadi tricolour at the iconic Suvarna Soudha in Belagavi on December 9, 2025. The event drew massive public attention as the monumental flag crafted entirely by Khadi artisans was hoisted to celebrate India’s spirit of unity, heritage, and freedom.

The unveiling took place during the Winter Assembly Session, adding political and cultural significance to the grand ceremony. The flag was crafted by the Khadi Centre in Dharwad and donated by the family of Vinod Kumar Revappa Bammanna from Kalaburagi district. CM Siddaramaiah described how the colours of the flag represent sacrifice (saffron),peace and truth (white),and prosperity (green), with the Ashoka Chakra symbolising continuous progress and equality for all.

During the ceremony, traditional protocols were followed with musical tributes, including the national anthem. CM Siddaramaiah also highlighted Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy and recalled the historic role Belagavi played in the freedom struggle, noting that Gandhi presided over a Congress session in the city 100 years ago. In honour of that centenary, a statue of Mahatma Gandhi was installed near the Suvarna Soudha earlier.

Dimensions and Features of the Massive Flag

While the exact measurements have not been officially released, the flag has already been recognized as one of the largest Khadi national flags in the world, second only to the record-breaking flag hoisted in Leh.It's Made fully from hand-spun Khadi cloth and was installed with high-strength support for safety designed for long-term display at Suvarna SoudhaThis massive tricolour is expected to become a major attraction and boost tourism in the Belagavi region.

During the ceremony, the Chief Minister emphasized that the Khadi tricolour symbolizes:

He also encouraged citizens to support Khadi products as a step toward empowering local weavers and craftsmen.
