A shocking incident from Hubballi has once again exposed the harsh reality faced by couples in inter-caste marriages. A 20-year-old woman, six months pregnant, lost her life after being allegedly assaulted by her own family members who opposed her marriage.

The incident took place on Sunday evening, 21 December, in a village under Hubballi rural police jurisdiction. Police officials said the woman had married a man from a different caste earlier this year, a decision that reportedly angered her family. Due to continued threats, the couple had been living away from her hometown and had returned only recently.

On the day of the incident, a confrontation reportedly broke out when relatives attempted to attack the husband. After he managed to flee, the woman was allegedly beaten inside the house. She suffered severe injuries and was rushed to a private hospital, where she later died.
Police have taken three people into custody, including the victim’s father, and registered a case. Investigations are ongoing to establish the full sequence of events.
The incident has triggered widespread condemnation, with many calling for stricter action against crimes driven by caste-based prejudice and so-called “honour.”
