Communal Unity Karnataka Temple Trust Apologizes to Muslim Community After MLA's Controversial Remarks

The Gopalakrishna Temple Trust in Tekkar village, Karnataka, has apologized to the Muslim community after BJP MLA Harish Poonja made controversial comments during a temple event on May 3.

During his speech at the Brahmakalashotsava, Poonja allegedly questioned why Muslims were invited and accused some of damaging decorations. He reportedly said in Tulu, “What was the need for us to go to the mosque and give an invitation? We are Hindus and should remain so.” His remarks quickly went viral, drawing backlash and sparking communal concern.

Several complaints were filed, including by the Muslim Okkoota group. The Uppinangady police have registered an FIR against Poonja under Section 353(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for making an inflammatory speech. Poonja defended his statement, saying he was trying to “awaken” the Hindu community and was willing to face legal action.

On May 7, the Muslim Okkoota met with the temple trust. The trust responded with a letter stating it regretted the MLA’s remarks and appreciated the cooperation of the Muslim community. They also expressed hope for peaceful coexistence among all communities in the future.
