New Delhi: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued an advisory against the unauthorised commercialisation of human milk and its products.
The advisory, dated May 24, 2024, comes in response to several representations from registered societies expressing concerns over the commercialization of human milk. FSSAI has clarified that it has not permitted the processing and/or selling of human milk under the Food Safety and Standards (FSS) Act, 2006, and the rules and regulations established under this act.
The regulatory body has emphasized that any activities related to the commercialization of human milk and its products should be halted immediately. Violations of this directive may result in stringent actions against the Food Business Operators (FBOs) involved, in accordance with the FSS Act, 2006. The advisory also instructs State and Central Licensing Authorities to ensure that no licenses or registrations are granted to FBOs involved in the processing or selling of human milk, often referred to as "Mother's Milk."
This action by FSSAI underscores the regulatory body's commitment to maintaining strict standards in the food industry, ensuring that all activities align with the safety and health regulations stipulated under the FSS Act.
The advisory has been circulated to all regional directors, commissioners of food safety in various states and union territories, and other relevant authorities to ensure widespread compliance and enforcement.
