Karnataka's Tax Collection Growth: CM's Pride, Nation's Model

Bengaluru : In a significant development, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah of Karnataka has directed Commercial Tax Officers in the state to take strict action against cases of tax evasion, tax leakage, and tax pilferage. This directive came during a review meeting of the commercial tax department held in the conference hall of Vidhansouda.

During the meeting, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah lauded the impressive growth rate of tax collection achieved by the Commercial Tax Department, which stands at an impressive 19.2%. Notably, this rate is the highest in the entire country. However, he urged officers not to become complacent and instead explore opportunities to detect even more tax evasion cases, with the ultimate goal of surpassing the tax collection target.

The Chief Minister stressed the importance of preventing tax evasion through intensive enforcement efforts, emphasizing that the department should be vigilant in this regard. He set an ambitious target for the officials, urging them to outperform the given growth target of 24% and take stringent action against tax evaders.
Karnataka's exceptional tax collection growth rate of 19.2% surpasses the national average, which stands at 15%. The state's share in the total tax collection of the country is an impressive 9.4%, and officials reported that this share has increased compared to the previous year.
In his address, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah highlighted the significance of tax collection for funding development projects in the state. He called for collective responsibility among officials to tackle tax evasion effectively, noting that increased tax collection would enable more development initiatives.
The Chief Minister urged officials to make every effort to exceed the set targets, with the assistance of vigilance forces. He also mentioned that progress would be reviewed again after two months, with a strong desire to see the situation improve even further by the next meeting.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah emphasized that necessary facilities have been provided to prevent tax evasion, and he urged the officers to remain attentive in identifying and collecting taxes from products where evasion is occurring.
In conclusion, the Chief Minister emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts to boost tax collection, which, in turn, would enable the state to undertake more development works. The meeting was attended by senior officers, including Additional Chief Secretary to Chief Minister Dr. Rajneesh Goel, Finance Department Additional Chief Secretary L.K. Ateeq, Finance Department Secretaries Dr. P.C. Zafar and Dr. M.T. Reju, Commercial Tax Department Commissioner C. Shikha, Chief Minister's Political Secretary K. Govindaraju, and Naseer Ahmed.
