Belagavi: Today, October 23rd, marks the birthday of the fearless warrior and queen, Rani Chennamma of Kitturu, who played a pivotal role in India's struggle against British colonial rule. Born in Kakati, a small village in what is now the Belagavi district of Karnataka, Rani Chennamma's legacy of courage and resistance continues to inspire generations.

Rani Chennamma, the first Indian ruler to lead an armed rebellion against the British East India Company, is celebrated for her unwavering determination in the face of adversity. She became the queen of Kitturu when she married Raja Mallasarja of the Desai family, adopting Shivalingappa as her heir after the tragic loss of her own son.

However, the British East India Company, invoking the controversial Doctrine of Lapse, sought to annex the princely state of Kitturu. This policy, regarded as illegitimate by Indians, led to widespread anger among ruling princes in India and contributed to the Indian Mutiny of 1857.
Defying the British order to exile Shivalingappa, Rani Chennamma sent a plea to Lord Elphinstone, the Lieutenant-Governor of Bombay Presidency, which was regrettably denied, leading to the outbreak of war. Despite the odds, Rani Chennamma valiantly defended Kitturu against the British forces.
On this special occasion of her birth anniversary, we commemorate Rani Chennamma's indomitable spirit and her role in leading the first armed revolt against British rule in India. Her legacy lives on, and her sacrifices are remembered as a symbol of bravery and resilience.
As part of the annual Kitturu Utsava, held from October 23–25, the first victory of Rani Chennamma and her enduring legacy are celebrated in Kitturu. Her samadhi, located in a serene park maintained by the Government, stands as a place of homage to this remarkable historical figure.
Let us remember and honor the legacy of Rani Chennamma, whose courageous stand against colonial oppression continues to inspire us all. Happy Birthday to this true Indian hero!
