Supreme Court: Add Rape Prevention to School Syllabus

New Delhi:The Supreme Court issued a notice to the Centre in response to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking measures to address the rising incidents of rape across the country. The PIL  includes  the need to increase public awareness of rape laws and the rights available to women by incorporating these topics into the school curriculum.

The petition highlights that despite the existence of stringent anti-rape laws with the potential to act as a deterrent, crimes against women continue to rise. Interestingly, The PIL argues that while tougher laws exist, simply increasing the severity of punishments is not a viable solution.

Reacting to such situations by making the punishments for rape more stringent with a knee-jerk reaction is no solution to the problem, the petition states.

It advocates for a more proactive approach, suggesting that educating young people about women’s rights and sexual crimes from an early age could help reduce incidents of sexual violence.

The court has asked the government to submit its response to the petition, which urges immediate action to introduce educational initiatives aimed at preventing crimes against women.

The Centre is expected to respond in the coming weeks as the debate on how best to tackle the growing issue of violence against women continues to gain national attention.
