Bengaluru: In a critical development Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has penned a letter to Union Hydropower Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, urgently seeking a reconsideration of the Cauvery Water Management Authority's decision to release water to Tamil Nadu. Siddaramaiah highlighted the dire situation faced by drought-hit farmers and the people of Karnataka.

Key Points:

1.Drought's Impact:Siddaramaiah emphasized the critical water shortage in Karnataka, attributing it to the failure of the monsoon. He argued that the state's reservoirs held insufficient water to meet the demands of both agriculture and drinking water.
2. Grim Forecast:The Chief Minister pointed out that the meteorological forecast offered no respite from the drought conditions until at least September 24.
3. Tamil Nadu's Water Use:Siddaramaiah contested Tamil Nadu's claim of normalcy, citing their extensive use of water for paddy cultivation despite the distress in Karnataka's reservoirs.
4. Tamil Nadu's Water Resources:He also brought attention to the vast groundwater reserves and favorable North-East Monsoon predictions in Tamil Nadu, which suggested they had the capacity to cope with the current situation.
5.Appeal for Reconsideration:The Chief Minister urged the reconsideration of the Cauvery Water Control Committee's decision, which required Karnataka to release 5,000 cusecs of water for 15 days. He asserted that this decision would further exacerbate the already dire conditions in Karnataka.
Implications:This appeal comes at a crucial juncture when the state of Karnataka faces an acute water crisis, and the decision of the Cauvery Water Management Authority has the potential to impact the lives and livelihoods of its residents significantly. The matter now awaits the attention and response of the concerned authorities.
